Título: La nano-tomografía para reducir los bloques de motor
Título original: The nano-tomography to reduce engine blocks

Resumen: The engines of vehicles manufactured by the automotive industry, in most cases, made of cast iron. Their production is cheap, but because of their large mass, they cause a rise in consumption.

Thus, engineers and researchers are exploring methods of producing cast iron engine blocks less dense, while maintaining sufficient mechanical strength. In addition to its chemical composition, crystal structure of the metal is of paramount importance; graphite such a great influence on the properties of cast iron, and therefore the focus of research.

Using nano-tomography [1], researchers at the University of Saarbrücken (Saarland) are now able to predict what form the graphite is present, and how it influences the structure. The analysis is similar to CT tomography [2] used in medical imaging. The object is not scanned by installments, but it is broken systematically by an ion beam nano-laminated, and then scanned by a beam of electrons. The series of images captured and are then reassembled by computer to establish a representation of the object in three dimensions. This process, by its extreme precision, not only determine the chemical composition, but also to see the crystal structure of the metal.

The detailed analysis of tomography has allowed researchers to determine how these structures affect the three-dimensional material behavior, and how they can identify themselves according to the terms of formatting, the usual two-dimensional slices. This should facilitate the development of parts such as engine blocks and crankshafts, subject to strict restrictions on size, providing foundries and their customers a way to identify specific requirements and define processes to apply formatting to achieve the desired results.

The project was funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and several companies, including Volkswagen and Halberg Guss. 
[1] Tomography is an imaging technique that allows to reconstruct the volume of an object from a series of measurements for each from outside the object. It is applied particularly in medical imaging, and in geophysics and astrophysics.

[2] Tomography or CT scanner medical imaging technique which involves measuring the X-ray absorption by tissue and by computer processing to scan and reconstruct 2D or 3D anatomical structures.
